Malay Food at Tupai-tupai restaurant

Tupai-tupai is a place to go if we are looking for Malay Food in KL.

We had our Iftar at Tupai-tupai restaurant yesterday, I love the thought of going there, but we were late from Putrajaya and rushing and facing heavy traffic jam. The parking was full but thanx to the operator who were really kind to let us park at the entrance upon seeing two babies in our car :-)... tak payah jalan jauh-jauh...

The restaurant was full and we have to squeezed in to get baby's stroller in, I think they have increase the numbers of chair and table that is why it was too crowded.

This the place to enjoy Malay food in a different setting, the name 'tupai' means squirel, so you can expect to see squirel ashtray and small little things to create the ambience of kampung / village.

I was busy attending my daughter and did not have time to snap any photo, but I must say that their butter prawn is nice.

The crowd were friendly, and we thought that Awie was there..but then we realised that guy just look similar with his hairstyle and buncitness...

Iftar 23 : Kari Kepala Ikan

At last yesterday we managed to get our favourite Kari Kepala Ikan at our favourite store : Pasar Ramadhan Putrajaya. It is only oneside but a big one..

Char Koay : the taste of this kuih is just the same except for the appearance.

Popia goreng & buah melaka

Cucur badak : The coconut stuffing look a bit pale coz normally the colour is orangey, the taste is average

Look at the eye ball...!!!

Main course : Kari Kepala Ikan..a BIG fish head for one person only..!! :-), this curry has been cook really well and the taste is always the same since last few years. I'm not sure what kind of fish, but the flesh is firm.

There is one lady in Alor Setar Market selling fresh curry paste that she prepared on the spot, it is much better than curry powder sold in packet. I wish this fish head curry could be just like that...

Iftar 22 :Tempe Goreng Bercili, kari kepala ikan..etc

Tempe Goreng Bercili : When I was a kid, I never like tempe at all until I studied for five yeras in Johore, and I mixed tempe in everything I cook from fried rice to Maggi goreng..yum yummm, Tempe is made from soy, therefore it is good for our skin just like our Khir Toyo claimed the flawless and smoothness of his cheek is due to full diet of tempe..:-@

Bergedel : I could just have this with any plain gravy alone..substitue for beef of chicken, this one was mixed with mashed potato and beef.

Ayam Percik: this come with very thick sauce, maybe too much starch..the taste is just nice, but I prefer if they cook the chicken a little bit longer.

Kari kepala ikan : fish head curry from our favourite store at Pasar Ramadhan Putrajaya, this stall only have three types of curry that comes in big pot, theirs are the best and the fish head are sold out by 4pm...sometimes we have to call and place order to get the fish head..the gravy could be kept for two days and taste is just the same sometimes even better.

Mee goreng : Fried noodle, but hubby called it mee goreng 'negro'...yuck ..coz of the colour from soy sauce..this one is from the same stall but it was not that good as yesterday's noodle.

Iftar 21: Kuih Lompat Tikam n Nasi Ayam..

Malaysia is not only a multi-cultural nation, we also have multi kuih with multi-weird name like this one: Lompat Tikam, who was that creative person that invented this recipe..I wonder how they got the name..?

Traditional East Coast delicacies

Bubur Lambuk : Rice Porridge, cooked with spices and chicken, beef and some garnishing, it is suitable during Ramadhan becoz our stomach need to served with soft diet after being working so hard all year round. This bubur

Keow Teow Goreng and Maggi Goreng : Fried Keow Teow with Fried noodle..this is more to Chinise style, more soy sauce were needed for this recipe. The appearance might be a turn off but the taste is different :-)....and sprinkles of green chillie add the zest...

Nasi Tomato : Tomato Rice with Beef Curry, this rice could be eaten on its own without any gravy becoz it has been cook with tomato sauce, milk,a bit of salt, spices like corriander, aniseed, pandanus leave, onion and lemongrass plus some food colouring...some people like to add a bit of rose water to gives extra aroma..

Nasi Ayam: Chicken Rice bought at Pasar Ramadhan Putrajaya,..they forgot to gave us the soy sauce, but at least the rice is good enough and taste well

Iftar 20: Ramadhan Buffet at Pyramid Tower Hotel

This is my second visit, the first one was last year, facilities are fine here, just next to shopping complex, therefore we don't have to rush. The setting and arrangement of the tables and buffet counter are considerably okay compared to other places, but the lightlibg are not enough. It was too dimmed for a big space like that. When having dinner it is best to have some light so that we could enjoy the food by looking at the shapes and colour. The ambience of the buffet area changed almost after 40 minutes, maybe due to complaint or the setting or the lighting system..

Food wise, I would say they have quite variety range : the traditional kuih are nice as is should be and I like their 'air asam boi' as well..

Iftar 18 : @ the office

We are having 'Majlis Berbuka Puasa' today at the office, but since I have to control, nurse and running around with two babies, I decided not to join this office event.
Anyway the chicken curry smells good, that will be servd with 'roti jala'. Normally when we have a meeting, it is hard to control the portion of this roti jala, because it's so tasty and the curry is perfect, everybody will take more that what were allowed. So whoever came late will just smell the curry without having to taste it :0

Preparation in progress..hot stuff !!

Plate to be stuffed with good food..buffet ettiquete - one plate for one type of food but people tend to mixed everything in...I do sometimes..brake all the rules :-@

These remind me of my small project..

Buffet table

Iftar 18:update @Syed Bistro, South City Plaza

Nasi Bukhara @ Syed Bistro:

The chicken bukhara came in BIG portion with well cook and tender chicken plus one boiled egg. Side dishes are papadom and acar.
The rice could be eaten without any gravy because it's been cooked with spices that gives extra flavour, tumeric powder, milk , corriander leaves, etc.

Acar is a must-have side dish, as it act just like salad. The taste of sweet and sour of acar will open up our taste bud as it made of pickled manggo, fresh carrot, cucumber, chilli powder and some spices.

Extra gravy for my partner (Beef curry)

'Food Critic' ..she loves papadom so much :-)

Iftar 18: Nasi Bukhara

We'll be going to Syed Bistro for Iftar today, maybe in Puchong or South City..that will be another portion of curry and spices.

Spices like fenugreek is good as milk booster for breastfeeding woman.

Will update after Iftar..

Iftar : 17

I like anything grilled, be it beef, lamb, chicken or fish, bought marinated lamb shoulder at Cold storage Alamanda last two day for yesterday Iftar along with fresh salad.

Mixed fruit : apple, red plum and pineapple..combination of sweet and sour, a perfect combination after a hearty meal

Salad : need some fibre after eating all those lamb

Starter or can be served as dessert : South Indian type of pudding called 'Keseri', made of sago mixed with raisin. This is a complimentary dessert from mamak restaurant that we bought other dishes (kurma, curry and sambal)

Baulu rendang with chillie sauce. The shape looks kinda weird in this photo :-)

This is the best thing about being in Malaysia, we have everything to try out..

Gulai Nangka

Its been 17 days of fasting...i miss my mom's good food like this Gulai Nangka :-

This version of gulai nangka is easy to cook, just put everything (jackfruit, spices, sour slice, shrimp) together in a pot, add water, cook until boil, add some coconut milk, let it simmer, add some salt.

Then fried some slice onion, curry leaves, corriander and star anise until brown, pour into the pot and let it boil for few minutes..and done..

I did not have enough time to cook yesterday, so we just cook rice and bought other dishes and kuih from Pasar Ramadhan not far from MOF (Ministry if Finance) Putrajaya. There are quite variety of food, all you got to do is walk, survey all the food and the price and of coz we can't tell whether the taste is as good as the presentation. So far we have marked few stall that could satisfy our taste :-)

Starter : Tepung pelita (RM2.00) Smooth and sweet, it comes with white (coconut base)top with green bottom.

Green : buah melaka - made of flour with stuff 'gula melaka' inside and garnished with fresh grated coconut (RM1.00). Brown : kuih kosui- I was looking for 'kuih lompang' but could not find one, found this revised version instead..ok la (RM1.00)

Kebab : bread stuffed with minced meat, onion, cucumber, chillie sauce and mayo (RM2.00)

Popia basah : this is my favourite especially when it comes with dried shrimp and lavish toppings...

Popia goreng : hubby's favourite, the ingredients are the same except for the sauce

Daging salai masak lemak , it looks like siput sedut in this photo :-)

Pucuk paku masak lemak : another traditional dish, this is his choice, he's more Malay than me :)

Laici-kang : dried dates, longan, dried nutmeg,sago...etc
